Common Name:  Krishna Kamalam

Botanical name:  Passiflora caerulea

This unique flower, something apart from what we are used to, is complex, with the five sepals and petals whitish in colour, surmounted by blue or violet filaments, then five greenish-yellow stamens and three purple stigmas. This flower is peculiarly named ‘Krishna Kamalam’ because it is said that the entire Mahabharata is present in this small flower - There are about 100 blue petals – one for each of the Kauravas, 5 of the yellow ones in the centre – one for each of the Pandavas. The green bulb in the centre symbolizes Draupadi, the queen of Pandavas.

The three filaments are for the holy trinity of Brahma-Vishnu and Mahesha.

Did you know that it was named passion flower after the passion - love and death of Jesus Christ on the cross?
