Dendrocalamus strictus, also known commonly as Iron bamboo or Calcutta bamboo accounts for about 53% of India’s bamboo cover. It is a densely tufted bamboo that can be grown for its dense cover it provides. It grows from 6 metres to 18 metres in height and is commonly cultivated in the plains and foothills in India, being native to the Indian Subcontinent. It would thrive in well drained soils and is often grown along with teak or in mixed plantations.
